Haddonfield seniors trying to uphold tradition

options

Don't tell Adam Augugliaro this is a rebuilding season for Haddonfield football.

Don't tell Brian Collins the Bulldogs are a team in transition.

Don't tell Mike DiNoia that his class is a bridge between one great era in the history of the program and another.

These guys are seniors. They have respect for Haddonfield's past and hope for Haddonfield's future, but they are more concerned with the here and now.

"We've embraced the challenge," said DiNoia, a two-way lineman and the only returning starter to take the field for the Bulldogs this season. "If people want to say this program is going to take a step back this season, we're determined to show them what we're all about."

Haddonfield is young, with eight sophomores in the regular rotation as well as a freshman kicker. Haddonfield also is inexperienced, with 11 new starters on defense and 10 on offense.

The Bulldogs have a strong-armed and talented quarterback in junior Mike McLaughlin - who was firing 40-yard spirals with accuracy during practice on Thursday - and a loaded freshman class.

So tomorrow could be a good day for the Bulldogs.

But seniors focus on today.

"This is their time," Haddonfield coach Frank DeLano said. "This is their time to carry the torch, to make their mark. They've seen what past classes have done. They want to represent the tradition."

Haddonfield went 32-4 from 2009 to 2011, made three straight South Jersey Group 2 title games, and in 2010 won the school's first sectional title since the creation of the playoff system in 1974. It arguably was the best era in the history of the program.

But most folks figured it ended when the Bulldogs graduated all those seniors after last season.

"I knew we were going to be better than people thought," said Collins, a tight end and linebacker. "I get motivated every time I step on the field, thinking people were saying that we weren't going to be a good team anymore."

Haddonfield is 3-1 entering Saturday's key Colonial Conference interdivision clash with 3-1 Woodbury. The Bulldogs have gotten good work from those sophomores, and McLaughlin is starting to come into his own, but the key has been the play and leadership of the seniors.

Augugliaro leads the team in rushing yards (302 on 50 carries) and touchdowns (four). Collins leads in tackles with 27. DiNoia has been the anchor of a rebuilt offensive line at center.

DeLano said his three captains also have stepped up as leaders.

"I learned so much watching the seniors last year," Augugliaro said. "I had grown up with those guys, and I watched the way they played every sport.

"They led by example, not by yelling. They led by how they played."

DiNoia said the three captains got together soon after the end of last season and vowed that this season would be a continuation of this golden era in Haddonfield football.

Things would change.

Things also would stay the same.

"I can remember getting together with Adam and Brian and saying, 'Just because we lost all those seniors, we can't say we're not going to have a good team,' " DiNoia said. "This is a new team, a different team. But this is our senior year. We don't want to take a backseat to anybody."

NYCC: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee's New Superman Series

Throughout most of his tenure at DC Comics, scribe Scott Snyder has mostly stayed in darkness -- the shadows of Gotham City and the muck of the swamp. But in 2013, he'll be teaming up with DC Comics co-Publisher and superstar artist Jim Lee for an all-new yet-to-be-named Superman comic book series. The project has long been rumored as Superman: Man of Steel, but DC hasn't yet confirmed an official title.

"As a huge fan of Scott's writing, I'm looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott's story as it unfolds," Lee said. "Scott's crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!"

Lee recently wrapped up a year-long run on Justice League with Geoff Johns, and previously handled the Man of Steel in a Superman run with Brian Azzarello.

"I've loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It's a dream come true for me on every front," Snyder added. "I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say it's the Superman story I'd write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It's an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it's a character piece for Clark -- it's going to challenge him to his core. And it's definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama -- the biggest and most earth shaking action I've ever done. Can't wait to see what you all think of it. Couldn't be more grateful or excited to get the chance to make this one!"

DC reinforced that the team would be pitting Superman against heroes both familiar and new. No solid release date was given, but I'd expect this book to be ready to go by the time Man of Steel hits theaters in June.

La Salle, St. Joe's Prep renew rivalry

options

The showdown between bitter Catholic League Class AAAA rivals, a matchup widely billed as the regular-season game of the year, is upon us.

La Salle, ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, and No. 3 St. Joseph's Prep will clash at 7 p.m. Saturday at sure-to-be-packed Plymouth Whitemarsh.

The Explorers (6-0 overall, 2-0 division) have outscored opponents by a combined 199-46; the much-improved Hawks (5-0, 1-0) have won by 135-41.

This is likely the first of two battles between the powers. Most expect a rematch in the Catholic League final.

Here is a closer look at Saturday's highly anticipated game.

Last year. In a regular-season finale, La Salle, overcoming a 17-0 deficit, stunned the Prep, 28-17, before an estimated crowd of 6,000 at PW.

History. The Hawks lead the overall head-to-head series, 39-35-1. In the former Thanksgiving Day rivalry, which ended in 2005, the Explorers had a 19-10 advantage.

No slowing down. The Prep's no-huddle, spread offense is averaging 27 points. It is sparked by dual-threat quarterback Chris Martin and tailbacks Vince Moffett and Olamide Zaccheaus.

Passing fancy. La Salle is averaging 230 yards through the air. QB Chris Kane has completed 82 of 124 passes for 1,334 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Solid runner. Mostly on draw plays, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Martin has rushed for 277 yards and four scores. "He's a tough, gutsy kid," La Salle coach Drew Gordon said.

Dangerous. The Explorers' Sean Coleman (24 catches for 467 yards, five TDs) and Jimmy Herron (21 for 348, six) are quick, do-everything types. Herron, in a wildcat formation, takes shotgun snaps.

On guard. With all the pooch-kicking the Hawks have done this season, La Salle will have its good-hands people ready.

Probable. La Salle two-way lineman Tom Spiteri is expected back after sitting out last week because of an ankle injury.

Good to go. The Prep's Dan Sherry, a strong safety and punter, returns after being sidelined with a concussion.

Key duel. Keep an eye on the tussle between the Prep's Paul Johnson, a hard-charging defensive tackle, and La Salle's guards.

Quotable. Hawks coach Gabe Infante, on La Salle two-way lineman and Navy recruit Patrick Hoffman: "He's the best kid I've seen on film. He's a mauler."

Analysis. The difference in Round 1 is the Explorers' ability to thwart the run, including Martin's up-the-middle tries, and Kane's continued throwing success.

Pick. La Salle, 24-14.

NYCC: Capcom Rebalancing Street Fighter X Tekken

Today, during the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary panel here at New York Comic-Con, Capcom's Matt Dahlgren announced a complete rebalance of Street Fighter X Tekken.

Dahlgren explained that the balancing would be similar to the balancing Capcom performed on the Street Fighter IV series. The update will come free of charge and make adjustments both large and small. Dahlgren offered several examples of the upcoming tweaks, including an adjustment to the life gauge coloring to better visualize how much health has been depleted, and a change to the "Fight" text that appears at the start of matches to avoid blocking the characters on screen.

A host of character-specific changes were also discussed and ranged from minute frame changes for attack animations to buffs in specific techniques. Oddly, an improvement to Cammy's Hooligan Combination was greeted with a tremendous burst of cheers and applause from the audience, leading this author to believe that the entire Street Fighter community must love Cammy. Or something.

Dahlgren ended his talk on the rebalance by announcing that the free update will launch in 2013.

Ryan Clements writes for IGN and, honestly, uses Cammy as a default character right after Ryu. He will admit that this selection is based purely on her awesome beret.

Minecraft Steve is PC’s Vice President

gordoncraftjpg

Half-Life hero Gordon Freeman will no longer walk alone. Via a campaign spokesperson today, Freeman announced that Minecraft Steve will be his running mate, representing the PC platform in the 2012 Video Game Presidential Election!

The pair stunned supporters by holding a completely silent victory party earlier today, forcing audiences to stand in confused silence before ultimately leaving the venue. "Freeman just stood there, staring at us, and I think he was holding a pipe, or maybe it was a crowbar?" one attendee told IGN. "Then the other guy started building some horse or something from Harry Potter? It was weird, man."

IGN sources reveal that the PC nominating committee suggested Freeman appoint Clippy the Paper Clip to write his campaign speeches, but that Freeman will not be appointing any additional staff. Freeman reportedly refuses to expand his cabinet beyond the number two despite widespread protests and desperate requests for him to add a third.

Freeman’s announcement marks the fourth complete ticket to be revealed, following Commander Shepard’s pick of Marcus Fenix for the Xbox 360 platform, Link picking Fox McCloud for the Nintendo platform and Nathan Drake picking Solid Snake to help represent PlayStation. The final candidate -- multiplatform representative Ezio Auditore da Firenze -- is expected to announce his running mate before the end of the week.

IGN will continue to post updates about election news as it’s announced, so for all of the latest updates, keep checking our ongoing coverage on the 2012 Video Game Presidential Election site!

Hang With IGN, Get Swag at New-York Comic-Con

If you're reading this while putting the finishing touches on your MODOK costume, selling blood to afford collectibles or practicing your elbowing techniques for "crowd management," chances are heading to New York Comic-Con this weekend. And if you're heading down there and want to hang with IGN or get swag, here's a handy list of all the places we're going to be.

Check Out the IGN Theater

The biggest and best panels throughout the weekend will be taking place at the IGN Theater. Everything from The Walking Dead to Arrow will be showcasing presentations in this main hall, and for the first time ever, NYCC will be streaming the presentations here. Find out more about The Dark Knight Rises: Part 2, Carrie, the Evil Dead remake, as well as Haven, The Bay, Beautiful Creatures, and more. For a full schedule of IGN Theater events, check out the NYCC panel schedule.

Play Angry Birds... With Your Body

Stop by IGN/Samsung's booth to play Angry Birds on a Samsung Smart TV with Gesture Control. Don't worry, we won't make fun of your flailing, contorting body... much. To try your bod at it, head to the booth right outside the IGN Theater.

Get Free Sh*t

There are so many ways to score delicious nerdy goodies at conventions, we won't list them all... just the ones that apply to us. We'll be roving with Universal giving away posters to RZA's upcoming martial arts ass-kick-fest The Man With the Iron Fist. Score a poster or track down the photo booth (Booth 1861) for a lasting kung fu memento from the show.

Or... head to what will likely be the greatest panel in the history of the universe: the combined Free Sh*t and Podcast Beyond Power Hour. First, Free Sh*t's Chris will be live and in person doing what he does best: sweating and being awkward. But he'll also be giving away gobs of stuff, ranging from worthless to semi-worthwhile!

This, but live:

Then stay in the exact same room for a live podcast extravaganza featuring Colin "He Only Does Everything" Moriarty and "Wonder Boy" Ryan Clements. Laugh, cry, get hit in the face with flying Blu-rays! For more details on the panel, check out this handy link.

Hang With IGN Editors

We have commandeered Dave and Busters in Times Square for an event that involves IGN editors, alcohol and games. What could go wrong? Come down and high-five (or low-five, we aren't picky) the IGN staff, drink beer and be merry. Don't really know how many more ways we can say it: you will drink, talk and have fun. Be there at 8:00 and we will, too.

The Barrens Blu-ray Review

Darren Lynn Bousman is a filmmaking machine. Last year, he gave us 11-11-11 and Mother's Day. And in 2012, we're getting two more horror films from the Saw-alum, including The Devil's Carnival and The Barrens. Bousman also has at least three more projects on deck for 2013-14. Talk about busy.

Even more fascinating is that nearly every film on his resume is different, playing around with different subgenres within the horror playground. His latest entry is The Barrens, and it's actually one of his best films. Borrowing pieces and parts of the folktale of The Jersey Devil, the film follows a broken family as they trek into the wilderness on a camping trip, but soon worry they're not alone.

Painted largely as a monster movie, with a few clever shades borrowed from The Amityville Horror, The Barrens explores the nature of fear while also expressing a few metaphors about family turmoil and regret. The movie actually manages to take a few refreshing twists and turns, leaving audiences guessing where the plot is actually headed.

The performances are quite good. True Blood's Stephen Moyer delivers an outstanding performance as the father, Richard Vineyard. His slow mental breakdown is incredibly creepy to watch, especially when you begin to question his motives. He's complemented by Mia Kirshner (The Vampire Diaries), who plays the mother. Oddly, her performance is fairly vacant in the first two-thirds of the picture. It's not until the final act where she comes out of her shell. The two kids in the picture, played by Allie MacDonald (House at the End of the Street) and Peter DaCunha (who's set to star in Home Alone 5), also deliver naturalistic performances. DaCunha is a particular highlight as his reactions to the on-screen violence feel completely real.

Unfortunately, like many Darren Lynn Bousman films, The Barrens suffers from pacing issues. The entire middle act drags a bit, slowing down the narrative and drying out any brewing tension. The film meanders to the point of becoming repetitive, and only manages to pay off thanks to a few solid twists.

The film's monster is also not seen nearly enough. In fact, we only catch odd glimpses of the beast, usually in quick-cut takes or in the shadows. It's understandable to keep the monster hidden to add tension and dread to the picture, but we never quite get a decent look at the beast. That said, the few glimpses we do see are a tad silly, so it's possible the beast was cut back to reduce any audience laughter.

The Barrens is the very definition of a lightweight horror picture. The story is simple. The characters are a tad thin. And there's not much conflict. But as a midnight movie, The Barrens should prove intense and fun. The cast is terrific, and the moody atmosphere and '80s-like cinematography add gravity to the narrative. While not quite a hidden a gem, The Barrens is certainly a must-see for fans of monster movies.

The film comes to Blu-ray courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The disc is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen, encoded in 1080p/AVC and mixed in 5.1 Dolby True HD. The two-disc set also includes a DVD copy of the film.

Shot on 16MM, The Barrens has a bit of an intentionally dated, early '80s slasher look to it, namely Friday the 13th. The gritty, grainy image adds quite a bit of texture and dread to the film – something that's often lost among modern horror films, which are usually shot using HD cameras. The encode handles the grainy image perfectly, with no compression or banding noted. That said, the image does succumb to some crush every now and then. This is likely the result of lower resolution photography, and not the result of the encode, though. For what it is, The Barrens looks outstanding on Blu-ray.

The film's 5.1 TrueHD track aims to impress with moody, atmospheric surround cues, heavy, thumping bass and clean dialogue. The film's folk-infused soundtrack is wonderfully mixed among the five channels, giving weight the film's inherent tension. The ambient sounds of the forest setting are also fully realized in this mix, adding a few fun layers to the film's many jumps and jolts.

Extras, sadly, are lacking. There's a commentary track with writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman and director of photography Joseph White. It's a solid listen that explores the mythology of the Jersey Devil, the production, designing the script and working with the cast. While a touch dry at times, the track is filled with plenty of insight and trivia, and should please fans of Bousman's other tracks.

The disc concludes with a series of trailers for other Anchor Bay titles, and a deleted scene, also with commentary by Bousman and White. At just 3-minutes, the scene is definitely worth a peek.

R.L. Shaffer is a writer at IGN. He enjoys a good monster movie, but hates camping. You can follow him on TwitterFacebook and MyIGN for quotes, rants, reviews, news and more!

The Verdict

The Barrens could have used a little more monster imagery, and a few more victims, too. But this creepy addition to the monster genre shouldn't go unwatched by genre fans.

The Expendables 2 Beats Batman, Spider-Man in China

No, that's not a typo. In an unexpected turn of events, The Expendables 2 has officially outgrossed both The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man in China.

As of Sunday, the bro-tastic followup to 2010's The Expendables has grossed $54 million, according to the L.A. Times. Meanwhile, Batman and Spidey came in just under that with $52.5 million and $48.5 million, respectively.

"It's phenomenal what's happening in China with this movie," said Avi Lerner, whose Millennium Films made Expendables 2. For China, the action sequel was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year, with Titanic 3D laying claim to the top spot with $146 million.

The American box office, of course, tells a different story. Domestically, The Expendables 2 only earned a modest $84 million, while The Dark Knight Rises pulled in $445 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man $262 million.

Raymond Zhou, a film critic for China Daily, recently explained that Expendables' success was likely due to the popularity of ensemble casts, which are quite common in Chinese productions.

"This is a perfect movie for Chinese audiences," Zhou said. "Just like over-the-hill singers can find a market in Vegas, over-the-hill movie stars can find a market in China."

Samsung Introduces the Galaxy S3 Mini

Samsung's Galaxy S3 is among the best Android phones available now. But while it's not quite as gargantuan as Samsung's Galaxy Note, it's still pretty big.

If you want a more compact phone with comparable performance, you're pretty much stuck with the iPhone 5. And as Samsung said itself in a press release, a "compact smartphone with a 4.0-inch screen … can be an optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones."

So we were stoked to hear the rumors that Samsung might unveil a Galaxy S3 mini - the same killer phone in a 4-inch package. And then they did! Except not.

The S3 mini has the same name and general design profile (which we didn't exactly love the first time around) as its big brother. And it gets the perks of Samsung's TouchWiz UI overlay for Android Jelly Bean.

But the similarities (and virtues) pretty much end there. That 4-inch screen has a disappointing resolution of 800 x 400, giving it a pixel density of 233 ppi (down from 306). The mini's dual-core processor is clocked at decidedly average 1GHz (down from 1.5). It's got 1GB of RAM (down from 2) a 5MP camera (down from 8) and a 1500mAh battery (down from 2100).

You might be thinking Samsung is just strategically branding a mediocre phone to ride their immensely successful flagship's wave of success. Well, you might be right.

No word yet on pricing or the chance of US availability. But is that even disappointing? Let us know in the comments.
