EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Matt Schaub may not get as much notoriety as Arian Foster, Andre Johnson or J.J. Watt, but the 31-year-old quarterback is just as responsible for the Houston Texans' 5-0 start as any of the team's other stars.

You see, Schaub doesn't get it done with the flash of Foster, the speed of Johnson or the strength of Watt.

He just gets it done.

"[Matt's] knowledge of the offense is as good as Kub's [coach Gary Kubiak's] knowledge of the offense," Texans tight end Owen Daniels said following Houston's 23-17 victory over the New York Jets on Monday night. "His poise is uncanny. He's always cool, always calm. He gets stuff fixed in the huddle. He's a tough guy, man."

That's for sure. On Sept. 23 against Denver, Schaub lost a piece of his ear after taking a nasty and illegal hit from former Eagle Joe Mays. He missed just one play as a result.

Through the first 5 weeks of the season, Schaub has completed 63.8 percent of his passes, while throwing eight touchdowns and just two interceptions. His passer rating stands at a very high 99.2.

Talk about efficiency.

"He's been very good," Kubiak said. "If I ask him to throw it 28 times, he's effective. If I ask him to throw it 50 times, he's effective. He really has a good grasp for what we're trying to do."

After starring at West Chester East High School and the University of Virginia, Schaub was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft. Schaub served as Mike Vick's backup from 2004 to '06 before being traded to the Texans in 2007.

He has been Houston's starter ever since, and was named a Pro Bowler for the first time in 2009.

"I knew he was the best guy out there for us [when the trade was made]," said Daniels, who has been playing with Schaub for the last six seasons. "He's progressively gotten better and better and better."

The Texans made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 2011, but Schaub didn't get to play. He suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury to his right foot in Week 10, which required surgery. He missed the rest of the season.

"There really wasn't any adjustments because we had all the time in the offseason to rehab," Schaub said. "There were some rough spots in the rehab throughout the spring, but once training camp came, it felt better than it had before my injury."

The 9-year veteran has still never played in a postseason game in his career.

He's well on his way to changing that in 2012.
