Martelli earns Cancer Society award

The American Cancer Society presented its Southeast Region Distinguished Service Award to St. Joseph's men's basketball coach Phil Martelli on Oct. 3.

The award is the highest regional honor given to a volunteer who has contributed to the American Cancer Society for a minimum of 10 years.

Martelli, who is entering his 18th season as the Hawks' head coach, serves as the national chairman of the Coaches vs. Cancer Council. While also serving as the Coaches vs. Cancer of Philadelphia chair since 1999, he has helped make the program the most successful one in the nation. It has raised more than $8 million since 1996.

Fords nationally ranked

Haverford's cross-country teams retained their rankings in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III national polls Wednesday.

The Fords men were No. 2 for the fifth consecutive week, while the women rose one spot to No. 16.

Alma mater honors coach. Widener football coach Isaac Collins will be inducted into the University of Rochester Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday.

Collins graduated from Rochester in 1994 as one of the school's premier running backs.

In his third year as Widener's head coach, he has brought the Pride back into prominence with a 20-7 record that includes a 6-0 mark this season.
