DICE is looking to bring the Frostbite engine to mobile devices. In a listing for a mobile software developer on its official site, the Battlefield studio says it’s “bringing Frostbite to mobile platforms” and aims “to deliver an engine as great on mobile platforms as it is on traditional HD platforms.” The listing mentions that candidates should have experience with “at least one” mobile operating system, and specifically mentions iOS and Android as examples.
The Frostbite engine is currently in its second iteration -- Frostbite 2 -- on consoles and will power multiple upcoming EA releases, including Dragon Age III, Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel and Need for Speed Most Wanted, among others. Interestingly, EA said recently that Need for Speed Most Wanted on Vita is “a direct port” of the console versions, suggesting that EA has Frostbite running on portables as well.
For now, the listing appears to confirm EA’s plans to bring Frostbite to mobile, but the move hasn’t technically been announced, and no titles using the engine have been revealed. We’ve reached out to EA for a comment about the listing and will update with any additional info we receive.
