Welcome back to IGN Nintendo's monthly round-up of all the hottest 3DS eShop games. Better late than never, right? As it turns out, September was a rather slow month on the download front, but it did at least yield a couple of awesome eShop goodies. So check out the guide below for an idea of which games you should buy, which you should consider, and which you should avoid at all costs. After that, we'll present our ranking of the best 3DSWare and 3DS Virtual Console titles currently on the market. This list will change and evolve along with the eShop catalog, so be sure to check back at the end of each month for the new ranking - and don't forget to sound off with your own thoughts in the comments section afterward.
So what was last month’s hotness? Let’s have a look…
Balloon Pop Remix couldn’t sound more like a generic download game, but it’s actually more charming than you might expect. The puzzle gameplay centers around popping similarly-colored balloons on the bottom screen. What keeps things interesting is that you use up mana for each balloon you pop, and only gain it back for chaining together combos. Run out of mana and it’s all over. While it can feel a little random when you end up chaining together a bunch of combos, it’s a pretty fun little puzzle game with a cute story mode and nice 3D visuals. Right now it’s going for $7.99, which is pretty pricey for what you’re getting. Still, if you have the cash and absolutely love puzzle games, you should consider giving this one a go.
A 2D platformer with a crazy development history, Fractured Soul finally found a home on the 3DS eShop. The game has you running, jumping and blasting your way to the end, but supplementing the traditional platforming fare is a cool warping mechanic. This has you pressing L or R to warp your character from the bottom screen to the top and back, allowing you to access different areas and engage with enemies in a different way. It’s a great hook, and online leaderboards are another nice touch. This title should especially appease gamers looking for a challenging platformer to sink their teeth into.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja for SNES was a fun game - but Mystical Ninja Starring Goeman (the third Goeman title to make its way stateside) is just not very good. While similar in some respects - mainly that you’re still walking, jumping, and attacking with a dude named Goeman - this Game Boy title simply lacks the polish and pacing of other entries in the series. There are five stages to work your way through, each with its own boss fight, but no part of the adventure seems able to reach the caliber of past Goeman titles. Pass on this one and wait for Legend of the Mystical Ninja to someday (hopefully) make its way to the 3DS Virtual Console.
While the crazy title may put some people off, The “Denpa” Men: They Came By Wave is a really cool, creative RPG, and easily the best eShop release this month. At its core, Denpa Men is a fairly basic dungeon crawler, but the collection aspect takes it to the next level. Using the 3DS camera, players must seek out different Wi-Fi signals (at home, work, the coffee shop, etc) and collect the different Denpa men they’ll find at each location. Each Denpa man has a distinct personality and different abilities, so you’ll want to collect as many as you can to build up your army before confronting the King of Evil. Overall, Denpa Men is a really fun, off-the-wall RPG that manages to generate a unique experience for every player, and should not be missed by eShop aficionados.
Rising Board 3D is an endless runner where you play as a penguin on a surfboard. Yet despite its amazing premise (a penguin on a surfboard!), it comes off as the kind of experience you’d normally download for free on your phone. All you do is scroll around the top screen, dodging randomly generated obstacles, grabbing collectibles and performing tricks with the A and B buttons. You can unlock different surfboards, but that’s about it as far as additional content goes. Without the inclusion of leaderboards to track your score, there’s really not much incentive to try to make big waves with this game. Don’t waste your cash on this one.
Quarth is basically Space Invaders meets Pictobits, but not quite as incredible as that may sound in theory. An arcade shooter/puzzle hybrid, the game has you moving a ship on the bottom of the screen, shooting blocks upward as you try to make complete squares and rectangles out of the falling shapes. There are a variety of power-ups you can earn for clearing levels, and you can choose either randomly generated courses or level-based ones to play through. While the continuing lack of multiplayer support for 3DS Cirtual Console releases cuts the experience down (work it out, Nintendo!), Quarth is still a fairly enjoyable puzzle experience. Just don’t expect the likes of Tetris or Pushmo.
That's about it as far as last month’s 3DS eShop releases go. One last note - while you’re on the eShop, don’t forget to download the Kid Icarus Uprising gameplay montage. Right now it’s free of charge, but no telling how long it will be available to download - so if you want it, get it soon!
Now head on over to the next page for a look at our eShop ranking for the month of September!
