Talking About A Hookah Bar

By Hookah Joe

During the last decade hookahs have started gaining a lot of popularity in the U.S. To explain in simple words a hookah bar is just like cocktail bar, but in a hookah bar you will get hookah in place of cocktails. Hookah bars are normally found in urban settings and quite often near college campuses and universities as well.

A Look at The History

The origin of hookah can be traced back to 500 years in what was then known as the Subcontinent. Making its way through Iran and into Turkey it experienced a surge of popularity among Turkish upper class and began to spread much more rapidly down through Lebanon and Syria and finally to Egypt, hence the hookah bar is strongly associated with the Middle East. Hookah bars in the middle east became the place for the elite to hang out and smoke hookah.

Features of Hookah Bars

Bars that are built to imitate the place of origin of hookah have generally Arab people running them. The furnishings are according to the Middle Eastern culture of Indian culture. At some bars, nothing is served besides hookah. However, at others coffee and other drinks are offered. A small bar usually does not have a liquor license and thus they don't serve alcohol. The larger bars, however, have a liquor license and they serve several cocktails in addition to wine and beer. Smaller hookah bars normally have music systems, however the larger bars have belly dancers, live DJs and the atmosphere seems to be a lot more like a night club.

Hookah bars that are close to institutions tend to be more casual and attract many students. Hookah is gaining a lot of popularity as a less hazardous approach to enjoy smoking. Also, since college years are usually a time of new experiences, regular social interaction, and building strong connections, the hookah lounge applies well to college life. The cities which are famous for having many secondary education institutions in the U.S. have seen a great boost in the popularity of hookah bars.

So What Exactly is A Hookah

Now you must be thinking what a hookah is? What is so special about this device that it is becoming popular everywhere accross the planet. Legend has it the hookah was initially made in 1588 by a Persian physician in the Indian court. At the time it was invented, it was given the name of "huqqa". The term hookah comes from the very same Indian word "huqqa".

When the hookah was first designed, it was constructed with coconut shells and must have looked quite simple than the complex and sophisticated designs of today. The structure of the hookah has 4 main parts:

1. Bowl - the tobacco is placed here.

2. Body - smoke derived from the burning tobacco is passed through the body to reach the water basin.

3. Water Basin - here the smoke goes through the water. After purifying the smoke remains in a chamber over the water.

4. Hose - the smoker breathes in the smoke from the chamber above the water using a hose. The hose can be up to many meters long.

Thick, cool and fragrant smoke comes out of the hookah.

A senior customer of a prominent hookah establishment in turkey said:

"What you put in the hookah matters not, but who is along with you when you are smoking. The idea is enjoy. You'll find, good, old, interesting and all kinds of people in a bar like this. All what people really need to come to a hookah bar is a spirit to socialize, meet and spend some time in the company of good friends."
