The Origin and Characteristics of Hookah Bars

By John McCree

In the last decade hookahs have started gaining a great deal of popularity in the U.S. A hookah bar is a commercial establishment where folks come with their friends to enjoy a "hookah". There are a lot of Hookah bars in urban areas in the U.S.

Quick History

Hookahs and hookah bars originated in India around 500 years ago in a far more primitive form near the Pakistan border. Hookah bars are principally associated with the middle east as it was the origin of hookah and the region from where hookah gained a lot of popularity. These businesses became places where customers would socialize, drink coffee, and discuss national politics and local events with a soothing hookah session.

What Does A Hookah Bar Look Like?

Bars that are built to mimic the region of origin of hookah have generally Arab people running them. The furnishings are in line with the Middle Eastern culture of Indian culture. Some are simple, and may not serve other items. However, at others coffee and other drinks are offered. A small bar typically does not have a liquor license and thus they don't serve alcohol. The larger bars, however, possess a liquor license and they serve several cocktails in addition to wine and beer. A few hookah bars try to give a setting like a club with live bands and DJs while many tend to keep the bar close to the origin of hookah bars with belly dancers performing in the bars.

Closer to college campuses, hookah bars are usually more casual with a wide mix of patrons, which includes college students of course. Hookah is gaining a lot of popularity as a less dangerous method to enjoy smoking. Hookah bars do well near colleges as college life is a time to experience new things and enjoy the freedom of life. The cities which are well-known for having a lot of secondary education institutions in the U.S. have noticed a great boost in the popularity of hookah bars.

So What Exactly is A Hookah

You want to know what a hookah is? A Persian physician, Abul-Fath-Gilani invented the hookah in 1588. He was in India then. It was named as a "huqqa". This name has remained with this device since that time, however, as this device spread throughout the world it gained several other names such as hubble-bubble and nargile.

When the hookah was first designed, it was made using coconut shells and must have looked quite simple as compared to the complex and sophisticated designs of today. A basic hookah has the following four parts:

1. Bowl - to keep the tobacco.

2. Body - the smoke passes from the body and reaches the water basin.

3. Water Basin - here the smoke passes through the water. Purified smoke stays in the chamber above the water until it is inhaled through the hose.

4. Hose - the smoker breathes in the smoke from the chamber over the water using a hose. The hose can be up to many meters long.

The above mechanism gives the smoker soothing and fragrant smoke.

A customer of a hookah bar in Turkey once said:

"The important thing is not what you put in the pipe, but who is with you when you're smoking. It's a whole experience. In a caf like this one, you find good people, the old people, the intriguing people. As long as there is a need for company and friendship, as long as people wish to stop and think, there will be hookah bars."
