What Is a Hookah?

By John McCree

A hookah is a device used in smoking flavored tobacco, allowing for purification of the smoke by using a water basin prior to inhalation. The the best quality hookahs are found in the region of in and around Middle East, where the hookahs actually belong to. The components of hookahs are simple and built in a straightforward way.

Parts

The image here shows the key parts of a hookah. The end of the body is submerged in a water jar through which the smoke produced by burning tobacco passes. The smokes comes out of the bottom of the body and is purified by the water and kept in air chamber over the water. Passing smoke through water cools down the temperature of the smoke and makes it much more suited for the lungs, which is an additional beneficial side effect of purifying smoke with water. The hose is located on the top left section of the water jar. The length of the hose is usually more than a meter. The smoker puffs on the hose and inhales the smoker from the air chamber. After inhaling, the smoker exhales clean and aromatic smoke. Hookahs are usually smoked in a social, group setting where smokers can enjoy each others' company.

What Is the Smoke Made of?

Generally people use Hookahs to smoke flavorful tobacco often known as shisha. Modern-day shisha consists of some or all of the following: tobacco, treacle (uncrystallized syrup produced in refining sugar), honey, sugar, molasses, glycerin, nicotine, dried fruit and distilled water.

Normally shishas use a base of fruit flavor for example Apple, Mango or Peach. But, these days most of the popular producers are experimenting with off-shoots of these fruity tastes, for instance Peaches 'n Cream, or Banana Split.

Adding flavor to tobacco at the time of production has become quite simple and now one can find a variety of different flavors. Any substance can be mixed in dried tobacco during the production to make unique flavors.

Where Did Hookahs Originate From?

The first hookah was designed by a Persian physician known as Abul-Fath Gilani in the 1500's. The word hookah originates from the indian name of this device "huqqa." After growing concerned with the health hazards of smoking, he designed a system whereby he passed the smoke with a water basin in order to 'purify' it. It is argued, however, that the hookah already existed in other areas of Persia, so the exact origin is not clear. Regardless, the recognition of the hookah grew all through India and Pakistan, westward into Iran, Turkey, and Lebanon. When the hookah reached Turkey, its fame surged in the Turkish elite, and it swiftly spread through Lebanon and Syria to the remaining Middle East and into northern Africa. Today, it is being used in almost every country of the globe.

As the hookah reached different countries, it picked up different names.

Nargile (also pronounced Argilee) - used in many Mediterranean nations from Italy to Turkey to Israel

Narguile - used in Spain

Lula (or lulava) - used in Albania, Bosnia, Herzegovina

Sheesha - used by nations in Northern Africa from Morocco to Egypt, and the Arab countries in the Persian Gulf such as Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia

Qalyan - used in Iran

Karim Khan - used in Russia, Belarus

Chillim - used in Afghanistan and Uzbekistan

Huqqa - used in India and Pakistan

Gudugudaa - used in Maldives

Marra Pipe - used in the UK

Where Can You Purchase A Hookah?

You can visit a shop in-person to purchase a hookah or you can buy one on the net. Since the beginning of this century, the number of hookah shops and hookah bars in the U.S. has increased. People who live in the more populated towns can certainly get a hookah shop near them. Hookahs are gaining acceptance in the U.S., but they are not as popular here as in the Persian Gulf.

In case you are unable to locate a hookah shop or you prefer to shop from the convenience of your home then you can purchase a hookah on the Internet.

What Are The Health Risks Connected with Smoking Hookah?

There is a lot of controversy about whether smoking hookah is less hazardous than cigarette or not. While inhaling any sort of smoke into your lungs presents a certain degree of threat, hookah lovers point out that hookah smoking is less hazardous as the smoke is cleaner and more purified than cigarette smoke. On the flip side, the people against hookah point out that it has all of the dangerous and cancer causing chemicals found in cigarettes. Another factor is that a hookah session may last as long as 60 minutes and sometimes even longer while a cigarette goes for just 3-4 minutes. On the other hand hookah is not as addictive as cigarettes. People smoke hookah once in one week or bi weekly for fun while a cigarette smoker smokes cigarettes daily, several times.
