What is a Hookah Bar?

By Hookah Joe

Within the last decade hookahs have started gaining a lot of recognition in the U.S. A hookah bar is a commercial establishment where individuals come with their buddies to enjoy a "hookah". There are many Hookah bars in urban areas in the U.S.

The History of Hookah and Hookah Bars

Hookah and the idea of hookah bars originated five centuries ago in the subcontinent close to where today is the border of India and Pakistan. Making its way through Iran and into Turkey it experienced an increase of popularity among Turkish upper class and started to spread a lot more rapidly down through Lebanon and Syria and eventually to Egypt, hence the hookah bar is heavily linked to the Middle East. Hookah bars became popular in the Middle East as the places where customers used to socialize and smoke hookah with other people.

Exactly What Does A Hookah Bar Look Like?

In the more cultural places, the lounges tend to resemble their roots more carefully, generally managed by people of Arab descent, furnished and decorated with a Middle Eastern or Indian motif. Some bars only offer hookah. But some multifunctional bars serve snack foods, coffee and sodas too. Typical neighborhood lounges don't have liquor licenses and so do not gain profit from alcohol. However, in larger towns, many trendier businesses serve alcohol, generally with a full bar designed for cocktails, wine, and beer. It isn't uncommon to see belly dancers, live bands, or DJs in the more high end urban hookah bars because they resemble a "night club" more closely than a neighborhood social establishment.

Closer to college campuses, hookah bars tend to be casual with a wide mix of patrons, which includes college students of course. Hookah is thought to be less hazardous than smoking cigarettes, cigars or other things and therefore hookahs are gaining a great deal of popularity. Hookah bars do well around colleges as college life is a time to try new stuff and enjoy the freedom of life. Cities renowned for their secondary education institutions, like Washington DC or Raleigh, NYC have noticed a surge in popularity with regards to these lounges.

The Mysterious Hookah

that you know what a hookah bar is, you may be asking yourself about the device that has been able to spread throughout the world and spark a smoking trend. Legend has it the hookah was first invented in 1588 by a Persian physician in the Indian court. It was named as a "huqqa". This name has stayed with this device since that time, however, as this device spread around the world it gained a lot of other names such as hubble-bubble and nargile.

The first hookah was made from coconut shells and it was nothing like the hookahs that are produced in the modern day, but the function of that hookah was same of purifying smoke by passing it through water. A simple hookah has the following four components:

1. Bowl - where tobacco is kept.

2. Body - the smoke passes from the body and gets to the water basin.

3. Water Basin - here the smoke passes through the water. After purifying the smoke stays in a chamber over the water.

4. Hose - after the purified smoke reaches the chamber, the smoker inhales deeply from the hose connected into the water basin. The hose can be up to many meters long.

The above mechanism provides the smoker soothing and aromatic smoke.

A senior patron of a popular hookah establishment in turkey said:

"What you put in the hookah matters not, but who is along with you while you are smoking. The idea is enjoy. All kinds of people, old, young and fascinating come to bars such as this one. All what people really need to come to a hookah bar is a heart to socialize, meet and spend some time in the company of close friends."
